The Lavender Blooms in June…

Lavender has a short but glorious time of exquisite, sweet-smelling purple blooms in the field here at Four Sisters Farm!

Although we have been growing lavender since 2019, we are still learning about this amazing plant that is a member of the mint family. There are 47 naturally occurring varieties of lavender species and from those 47, there are more than 450 cultivated varieties that have been bred for color, size, scent, and use among other things. Colors vary from white to pink to bluish purple to all shades of lavender and some are suitable for culinary purposes while others are high essential oil producers. Some varieties grow better in our zone here in south central Kansas so we have settled on 12 varieties on our farm and currently have two single plants of two different varieties in pots just for fun to see how they will do.

We love to show off the lavender but because we are a small family-owned and operated farm, we have limited time and resources to make that happen. We sometimes are able to host nearby groups (usually women’s church groups, sometimes families, once in a while a club/organization) and love having people out. We don’t advertise but we are a part of Kansas Agritourism and are always thinking about ways to have folks come see the lavender each June.
